Immunet By The Numbers

As I write this we sit at 17,000 installed users in the Immunet Community.  When we rolled out on August 19th we had something in the neighborhood of 67. For an organic rollout that¹s pretty impressive by anyone¹s reckoning.

I¹ve been meaning to update the community on our progress for a while and I thought that I would start by covering some of the basic data we are now starting to cull out of the copious amounts of log data that we are generating. We plan to make this blog (Immunet By The Numbers) a regular occurrence to showcase our community data.

So, let¹s dig into some of our base data.  I¹ll separate it out by category to help make some sense of it.  Please keep in mind this data is pretty fluid so it will changeover time.

Location - where are we all from?

You might wonder where our community is situated. Our community’s location affects the quality of our data. Our initial numbers are bulked up into a handful of geographies and this is an important start but we do expect it to broaden. The actual install locations are somewhat surprising.

Our current regional breakout looks like this:

The coverage in the US (48%) is not much of a shocker; the beta is available only in English after all. The Brazilian (12%) community and Italian (9%) communities  were welcome surprises though. Italy is a region not generally associated with early tech adoption and is tough to get a foothold in, so thanks to all of our Italian users!

Brazil is also a fantastic region to see growth in. Brazil was an early adopter of online banking. This early adoption had the unfortunate side effect of seeing Brazil serve as a proving ground for malware authors attempting to steal financial data. This has led to Brazilian banks being at the forefront of anti-fraud technologies and has forced the malware authors who target Brazilian users to continuously keep pace with the banks efforts to protect their users.  This all adds up to Brazil often serving a bellwether for change in the threat space. Having a strong footprint in Brazil will only serve to help better secure our Brazillian users and pass their benefit upstream to the rest of the users in the Immunet Community.

On a parting note for this topic, regional uniqueness is actually seen to some degree across our whole user base but that's a blog for another time.

What the Immunet Community is seeing

The numbers, which generally get the most attention, are around the infections or viruses seen by the community.  So let me dig into the base numbers with you by framing what our protection landscape looks like.  Our users break into two distinct types. Users who run Immunet Protect with another security product and those who run Immunet on its own. We currently check our user base for the presence of 18 other consumer security products.

This list is not %100 exhaustive but it certainly covers the bulk of product vendors we are likely to be side by side installed with. The side by side¹ install breakdown as of today in the Immunet Community looks like this:

If your thoughts on the AV space are anything like mine you¹re probably shocked to see the above data. Those numbers indicate  that 69% of our users have no AntiVirus at all at the point they install Immunet Protect.

That number is much, much higher than I thought it would be.  It will be interesting to see as our data matures if this number holds. I believe the reason for our low counts is that people generally feel their AntiVirus turns their machine into a brick. Every performance issue is often blamed on their AntiVirus and this more often than not results in it being taken off the PC (for good or bad). This assertion is based on conversations I¹ve had directly with our users . It¹s also evident to people who watch the industry that there is no shortage of churn in this software space. People dump their AV software with high degrees of frequency. What surprises me is that some people seem to be dumping it in favor of no protection at all, well until they installed us that is :>

Threats & The Immunet Community

What does the Threat Landscape look like for the Immunet Community? That¹s a question we hope to answer in this blog with some frequency but here is some base data we¹ve culled out for this blog.

From August 19th to October 5th 28% the Immunet Community (16,000 users on the date of these stats) experienced and blocked a threat with Immunet Protect. The overall number of threats the Immunet Community blocked was 68,394!  This is a noteworthy success; this means that we stopped just over 68,000 infections in our community.

Of those users who encountered a threat it was unusual for them to experience only one threat. In fact, the average exposure for a user who saw a threat was 15 threats. This tells us that user’s who experience at least one infection are much much more likely to see many.

So, what do you bring to the party?

A question that get¹s asked of me often is “what additional protection can you prove if I install you alongside other AntiVirus?” That is a tough question to answer however I pulled some numbers to showcase our detection rates alongside our most populous side-by-side installs. These numbers show detections that we made, and presumably were not made by the vendor that we were installed with.

From August 19 to October 5:

- Immunet blocked 5,859 threats in this period for users running AVG

- Immunet blocked 843 threats in this period for users running McAfee

- Immunet blocked 397 threats for users running Norton

For those users who had us installed alongside their traditional AntiVirus products, our technology added a profound extra layer of protection. The number of total side by side detections was about 1.5 times higher than what each stand-alone product saw on their own. For those users who did not have any AntiVirus we stopped 61,295 threats. Across the board those are numbers that we are pretty satisfied with.

The Windows computers in my house use Panda Cloud, Forticlient, and Nod32, none of which are counted. If the list were more comprehensive, I suspect that the naked count would be closer to 50%. Also, there isn't much encouragement on the front page for people to use this as a supplmental product, so they assume it is primary. We've been telling people for years that running multiple AV scanners is a bad idea, so it's going to take a while before products like immunet and threatfire are widely accepted supplements.

Well said. I never thought I would agree with this opinion, but I’m starting to view things from a different view. I have to research more on this as it seems very interesting. One thing I don’t understand though is how everything is related together.
